The prime minister is on the rocks, facing what is likely the gravest point of his premiership over the Mandelson scandal.
Various news outlets are reporting that his former deputy, Angela Rayner, is waiting in the wings and ready to launch a bid to take over.
Her name is often mentioned as a potential leadership rival, alongside the likes of Wes Streeting, Shabana Mahmood, and Andy Burnham.
And while there’s no firm evidence Rayner is actively preparing a bid, she has been making some moves behind the scenes.
Rayner was instrumental in brokering a government climbdown on Wednesday, when ministers agreed to send the Mandelson files to an independent parliamentary committee for security redacting, when it became clear Labour MPs wouldn’t back the government doing it themselves.
